The Agreement on Climate Change, Trade and Sustainability (ACCTS) is a ground-breaking trade agreement that delivers commercial opportunities for New Zealand while also helping to address sustainability challenges. The agreement was established to foster the contribution of international trade in addressing climate change and other serious environmental challenges, including loss of biological diversity and pollution.
Signed by New Zealand, Costa Rica, Iceland, Switzerland on 15 November 2024, in includes guidelines for high-quality voluntary eco-labelling programmes to promote transparent and sustainable trade.​

Guideline A
Ecolabels should provide truthful, not misleading, comparable, substantiated and verifiable environmental information.
Planetary Facts assess environmental impacts using a methodology based on ISO standards for life-cycle assessments and Environmental Labels. The results are quantitative, transparent, comparable, and verifiable.
Guideline D
Ecolabels should be based on robust methodology that takes into account scientific and technical information.
Planetary Facts is an application of scientifically peer-reviewed Planetary Accounting Framework, which builds on the internationally accepted Planetary Boundaries.
The Planetary Facts methodology is based on ISO Standards 140040:2006 and 14044:2006 for life cycle assessments, and follows ISO 14025 guidelines for Type 3 Environmental Labels.
Guideline G
Ecolabels should not discriminate between goods and services based on their origin.
Planetary Facts considers the nuances of product origin such as specific impacts of different energy systems without discrimination.
Guideline J
Ecolabels should foster best practice and improvement over time in relation to environmental performance.
Planetary Facts enables in-category and inter-category comparisons with other products and highlights performance against scientific benchmarks.
Assessments highlight hotspots across the life cycle of a product, to support businesses to identify potential initiatives to reduce impact.
Guideline M
Ecolabel verification (if required) should be peformed by an independent accredited body in accordance with relevant and recognised international standards, guidelines and recommendations.
Planetary Facts labels will include independent verification by accredited partners.
Guideline B
Ecolabels should allow consumers to differentiate environmentally preferable goods and services.
Because they are set in the context of the Planetary Boundaries and a ‘recommended daily limit’, Planetary Facts allow consumers to weigh up and compare any product or service on the same, consistent basis.
Guideline E
Ecolabels should be developed and implemented through wide and balanced consultation with stakeholders.
The Planetary Facts methodology and label were developed in conjunction with a Steering Group comprising industry representatives, subject matter experts and community members. Ongoing refinement of the methodology will be undertaken with broader private sector, industry, government, subject matter expert, and community involvement.

Ecolabels should be internationally relevant - adhering to relevant standards, recommendations and guidelines.
Planetary Facts aligns with international frameworks and standards including the UN SDGs, Planetary Boundaries, Doughnut Economics, TNFD, GRI, ISO standards, PEF, CSRD.

Ecolabels should take the most significant environmental impacts of the product’s life cycle into account.
Planetary Facts metrics cover impacts related to all 9 Planetary Boundaries, widely considered the gold standard for holistic environmental sustainability.

Planetary Facts provide a holistic view of the environmental impacts of a product or service across all of the Planetary Boundaries.

Ecolabels should promote/remove restrictions for international trade.
Planetary Facts aligns with emerging product reporting regulations and standards from overseas markets which are underpinned by the Planetary Boundaries (e.g UK’s IGD Eco-Labelling recommendations for supermarkets), and with international standards for nature such as Nature Related Financial Disclosures (TNFD).
