Bringing Planetary Facts to Tourism
Project overview
“Planetary Facts" is an eco-labelling scheme established by the Planetary Accounting Network to cut through greenwashing by providing holistic, easy to understand, disclosures for products. In 2024 PAN partnered with the Tourism Industry Association, Destination Queenstown, Destination Southern Lakes, Queenstown Airport, and local tourism providers, to adapt Planetary Facts for tourism sector.
The goal of Planetary Facts is to give tourism operators the data and insights they need to deliver regenerative tourism experiences; and the ability to clearly and credibly communicate environmental performance to visitors to enable better visitor choices and flow on market pressures. It will also help RTOs and Industry Groups to use data and science to quantify ‘regenerative tourism’ goals, and track progress against these.
Visitor Insights
The first stage of this initiative comprised a survey to validate visitor demand for Planetary Facts labels, test visitor understanding of key elements of the labels, and obtain feedback to enable sector specific refinement of the Planetary Facts system.

Results are summarised on the infographic below, or for further details, become a member (it's free!) to download our white paper Planetary Facts for Tourism - Visitor Engagement with Eco-Labels.
We are now working with early adopters to quantify the Planetary Facts of their tourism offerings! To find out more about whether the programme is for you, drop us a line at info@planetaryaccounting.org.
